Green School Opening Ceremony in the Botanic Garden on Saturday, 19 June 2010 | Highlight: „The Magic Flute“ open air

After nearly a year of construction, the Green School in the Botanic Garden of Mainz University has been completed; the opening ceremony was celebrated by a large garden party. At the opening ceremony, Doris Ahnen, Minister for Education, Science, Youth, and Culture of Rhineland-Palatinate, lauded the Green School as a new "school-like environmental education facility in Rhineland-Palatinate (SchUR)".

Throughout the inaugural day, the Botanic Garden offered thematic guided tours, e.g., relating to the "International year of biodiversity 2010," and an exciting program with a lot of activities for the whole family: a garden rally for kids, making jewelry from beans, experimentation with fiber and dye plants, making paper from asparagus peelings, and helping to extend the insect hotel. The School of Music accompanied the opening party with a program of music on the large stage in the Botanic Garden.

At the end of the party, a summer musical treat was on the program - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera, "The Magic Flute" performed in the open air of the Botanic Garden. The soloists, the choir, and the orchestra from the School of Music were conducted by Prof. Wolfram Koloseus and directed by Catherine Thoma. In the past few years, the Botanic Garden and the School of Music have enjoyed massive public success through joint events such as the most recent Music Night in 2007.
